Note: To be able to open PDF files or images from Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook documents, you need to have the corresponding Microsoft Office application installed on your system.
The installation program will guide you through the installation process. Please close all the applications prior to installing ABBYY FineReader.
To install ABBYY FineReader:
- Insert the ABBYY FineReader 11 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The installation program will be launched automatically.
Tip: If the installation program is not launched automatically, double-click the Setup.exe file located on the ABBYY FineReader 11 CD-ROM.- Follow the installation instructions.
Installation options
Select an installation option:
Typical (recommended) - This option installs all the components of the program. You will be prompted to choose an interface language during installation.
Custom installation - This option allows you to choose to install only specific components of the program.
Note: If you wish to retain your user patterns created in an earlier version of ABBYY FineReader, do not remove the earlier version of the program prior to installing the new version. All the existing user patterns will then be available for use in the new version.
Installation of ABBYY FineReader 11 Corporate Edition on a network server can only be carried out by the system administrator. The installation consists of two stages. First, the program is installed on the server. From the server, the program can be installed on workstations using one of the four methods:
- Active Directory
- Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)
- Task Scheduler
- form the command line
- manually in interactive mode
For more information about installing ABBYY FineReader on workstations, working with the License Manager, and working with the program in a local area network, please refer to the System Administrator's Guide which can be found in the Administrator's Guide folder on the ABBYY FineReader 11 CD-ROM.
To start ABBYY FineReader 11, do one of the following:
- Select Start>Programs and then select the ABBYY FineReader 11 (or ABBYY FineReader 11 Corporate Edition) item.
- In a Microsoft Office application, click the ABBYY FineReader button on the toolbar.
- In Windows Explorer, right-click the file you wish to open and then select the Open with ABBYY FineReader command on the shortcut menu.
Note: Make sure your scanner is connected to your computer, plugged in, and turned on before you start ABBYY FineReader. To install a scanner after installing the program, please consult the user guide supplied with the scanner for instructions.
To use user dictionaries created in ABBYY FineReader 8.0, 9.0 or 10 in ABBYY FineReader 11:
- Remove ABBYY FineReader 8.0, 9.0 or 10 from your computer.
- Install ABBYY FineReader 11.
- Run ABBYY FineReader 11 (select Start>Programs>ABBYY FineReader 11).
- On the Tools menu, select the View Dictionaries... command.
- In the User Dictionaries dialog box that opens, select the dictionary you need and click the View... button.
- In the dialog box that opens, click the Import... button.
The dictionaries that you can import into ABBYY FineReader 11 are located in the following folder
- In Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7: %userprofile%\Roaming\ABBYY\FineReader\x.00\UserDictionaries;
- In Microsoft Windows XP: %userprofile%\Application Data\ABBYY\FineReader\x.00\UserDictionaries.
- Select the dictionary you need and click the Open button.
You can also use user dictionaries created in ABBYY FineReader 8.0, 9.0 or 10 without removing the earlier version:
- Run ABBYY FineReader 8.0, 9.0 or 10.
- Open the Options dialog box (Tools>Options...) and click the Advanced tab.
- Click the User Dictionaries... button.
- In the User Dictionaries dialog box that opens, select the dictionary you need and click the View... button.
- In the dialog box that opens, click the Export... button and save the dictionary.
- Install ABBYY FineReader 11.
- Start ABBYY FineReader 11 (select Start>Programs>ABBYY FineReader 11).
- On the Tools menu, select the View dictionaries... command.
- In the User Dictionaries dialog box that opens, select the dictionary you need and click the View... button.
- In the dialog box that opens, click the Import... button and enter the path to your saved dictionaries. Select the dictionary you need and click the Open button.
When integrating ABBYY FineReader with Microsoft Office applications, check the security settings of these applications (Tools>Macro>Security...).
For the correct integration of ABBYY FineReader with Microsoft Office 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2010 applications, you must select Trust all installed add-ins and templates on the Trusted Sources tab if Security Level is set to High or Medium.
Important! If you have changed the security settings, restart the corresponding Microsoft Office application.

ABBYY technical support service staff will need the following information to answer your question competently:
- the serial number of your ABBYY FineReader copy (not applicable to users of ABBYY FineReader Try & Buy)
- the model of your scanner
- a general description of your problem and the full text of the error message (if any)
- the version of your Windows operating system
- any other information you consider important
You can get some of this information automatically by starting AInfo.exe located in the ABBYY FineReader 11 folder on the ABBYY FineReader CD-ROM.
Important! Only registered users are eligible for free technical support. You can register your copy of the application on the ABBYY Web site or by selecting Register Now... on the Help menu.
To remove ABBYY FineReader 11 from your computer:
- Select Start>Settings>Control Panel and double click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
Note: In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Programs and Features icon.- In the dialog box that opens, select ABBYY FineReader 11, click Remove, and follow the instructions of the program.
User dictionaries are located in %userprofile%\Application Data\ABBYY\FineReader\11.00\UserDictionaries and have the .ame extension.
Scantwain.txt and Scanwia.txt are stored in the user profile:
- In Microsoft Windows XP: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\ABBYY\ScanManager\11.00
- In Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\ABBYY\ScanManager\11.00
